The Salk Institute, known for its contributions to basic research and discoveries in cancer drugs, has announced an unexpected delay in the construction of its $250 million science and technology center. This decision pushes back the project by three years, according to a report from the San Diego Union Tribune.

According to a landing page for the project on Clark Construction’s website, The Salk Institute Jacobs Science & Technology would span 100,000 square feet and feature a mix of educational spaces, including laboratories, conference rooms and offices. There would also be a 104,000 square foot parking garage.

The postponement follows Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan’s commitment of up to $100 million towards the construction of the Jacobs Science and Technology Center. Despite recent successful fundraising efforts, concerns loom within the local scientific community about the Salk’s ability to secure the full $250 million needed for the sci-tech center. The institute has faced challenges in expansion discussions since its inception in the 1960s.

Known for pioneering basic research leading to vital cancer drugs like Gleevec and Avastin, the Salk Institute aims to extend its impact by directly involving itself in drug development and addressing climate change. Recent initiatives, such as the $50 million donation from New York-based energy company Hess Corp. for carbon capture research, underscore the institute’s commitment to broader scientific endeavors.

Despite the delay and potential funding challenges, Salk remains optimistic about its long-term financial goals. Joyce stated that the institute is on track to raise $750 million by June 2026, marking the end of its current seven-year fundraising campaign.
