San Diego International Airport will open its new Terminal 1 to passengers on September 22, completing the first phase of a massive infrastructure overhaul that began construction in November 2021. The project replaces a 1967-era facility that handled 9.8 million passengers in 2024—far exceeding its original design capacity.

The replacement terminal spans approximately half a mile longer than its predecessor and will eventually accommodate 30 gates across two construction phases. Initially, 19 gates will begin operations in September, with the remaining 11 scheduled for completion by 2028. The facility’s enhanced baggage handling system can process 2,000 bags per hour during peak periods.

Airlines confirmed for the September launch include Breeze, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and SunCounty. Air Canada and WestJet will join operations in spring 2026, followed by Delta in early 2028.

The terminal’s retail and dining program features local San Diego establishments including 900A Tony Hawk Public House, Better Buzz, Mr. Moto Pizza, and Cutwater Restaurant & Bar. Design elements throughout the facility incorporate regional themes, with artwork highlighting local culture and natural landmarks.

Supporting infrastructure improvements accompany the terminal opening. The airport recently completed a second parking plaza phase, adding 2,400 spaces to the Terminal 1 complex. A new one-mile direct access road eliminates traffic signals and intersections, providing uninterrupted routes to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 departure and arrival areas.

The original Terminal 1 structure will be demolished following the transition to the new facility, marking the end of nearly six decades of service for the aging infrastructure. The project represents one of the largest capital investments in San Diego International Airport’s modernization efforts.
