The Farms Golf Club, a private golf club established in 1988 in Rancho Santa Fe, is set to undergo an $18 million renovation that promises to elevate its status as a premier golfing destination. The project is part of a new 20-year partnership with San Diego State University (SDSU), making the club the official home of the university’s men’s and women’s golf teams as they transition to the Pac-12 Conference.
The Farms Golf Club’s president, Andy Jones, announced plans to enhance the club’s facilities while maintaining its signature Pete Dye design elements, including vertical plank railroad ties, square bunkers, and challenging course layouts. According to a report in the San Diego Business Journal, these upgrades aim to bolster the club’s playability, aesthetics, and reputation.
The renovations will include:
• A State-of-the-Art Golf Performance Center: Designed by Delawie Architects, this facility will feature advanced technology, including two hitting bays equipped for swing analysis and club fitting.
• An SDSU Team Room: Custom-built spaces for the Aztec teams will include day lockers, training equipment storage, and lounge areas.
• Enhanced Practice Facilities: A 1-acre short game facility designed by Mike Angus and a new driving range with sweeping views from an elevated roof deck.
These upgrades will benefit SDSU’s golf teams and provide club members with unparalleled training and social amenities.
The partnership underscores SDSU’s commitment to excellence as the men’s and women’s golf teams prepare for their debut in the Pac-12 Conference in 2026-27. The teams will enjoy access to cutting-edge practice facilities at The Farms, complemented by two new golf simulators installed on campus for year-round training.
SDSU women’s golf has already made The Farms its home course, hosting the annual Lampkin Invitational. The men’s team, with three consecutive Mountain West Conference championships under its belt, will join their female counterparts in leveraging the new facilities to compete at the highest levels.
Permitting for the project is underway, with construction scheduled to begin in late 2025. The goal is to complete the renovations in time for the SDSU teams’ 2026 seasons. During the upgrades, the club will temporarily close its course in March 2025 to implement the changes, including new turf, irrigation systems, and Dye-inspired bunkers.
The Farms Golf Club has long been recognized for its challenging par-72, 6,900-yard course, which has hosted high-profile tournaments such as the NCAA regional championships, the report added. Renowned designers like John Fought and Tom Lehman have contributed to the course’s evolution, ensuring it remains a test of skill for golfers of all levels.
This latest project, supported by SDSU’s $3 million contribution, represents a significant investment in the future of golf at The Farms and within the university’s athletic programs. As The Farms prepares for its transformation, it continues to honor its legacy while embracing a dynamic new chapter.
