In a move that solidifies its commitment to expanding student housing options, UCLA is set to acquire a 1940s apartment complex located at 901 Levering Avenue in Westwood. This strategic acquisition comes on the heels of the university’s recent construction of two state-of-the-art student apartment complexes nearby, demonstrating a concerted effort to address the growing demand for housing in the bustling neighborhood. The university announced the acquisition in early June in a CEQA notice filed with the State of California.

The 901 Levering Avenue property, a 24,000-square-foot building housing 42 residential units, presents a unique opportunity for UCLA to further its mission of providing convenient and affordable housing options for its students. While the university’s specific plans for the property remain undisclosed, the acquisition aligns with UCLA’s ongoing efforts to expand its housing portfolio and enhance the overall student experience.

UCLA’s recent building spree has transformed the Westwood landscape, with the addition of thousands of new student dormitories over the past five years. The 10-story Levering Place housing complex, located adjacent to the newly acquired property, offers 216 student beds and exemplifies the university’s goal of adding modern, comfortable living spaces. Across the street, a 17-story development boasts over 1,100 beds, further expanding UCLA’s housing capacity.

The university’s dedication to student housing extends beyond Westwood. UCLA has also acquired apartment buildings on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Los Angeles, converting them into student housing to meet the diverse needs of its student body.

As UCLA continues to grow and evolve, its commitment to providing adequate and accessible housing remains unwavering. The acquisition of the 901 Levering Avenue property marks another significant step in the university’s ongoing efforts to create a vibrant and supportive living environment for its students. The university’s efforts to expand its housing facilities have not kept pace with the increasing enrollment numbers and the growing desire among students for on-campus living due to its convenience and cost-effectiveness compared to off-campus options. Off-campus, rising rents and limited availability exacerbate the situation, forcing many students into longer commutes or substandard living conditions.
